PredatorTC September 2015 Kill

Unread postby PredatorTC » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:04 pm

Here he is boys. I shot this buck last week the night after that front came through. I was actually setup not far from the apple tree I shot my EWT video buck right on the edge of bedding in some cattails and dogwood. I was setup in the closest dropping oak tree to bedding. At 6 o’clock, I heard a stick break and he was almost to my shooting lane. Way earlier than I had expected. I had a quick look at him and did not recognize him and had to decide if I was going to shoot him or not. By the time I decided I would, he was out of my shooting lane. I powered up my video camera and gopro to at least get a little footage of him as he walked off. Suddenly I noticed he was making a big loop straight back at me right under my tree. It was interesting to see the way he was scent checking all around the apple tree he was headed to by making a big loop. I put the camera on him and came to full draw only to notice that I had not hit the record button. I let down, quickly hit record, and he was out of my lane again. Suddenly he was down wind of me behind trees and brush frozen still. He kept licking his nose to get a better wiff of me, but he was really close and I was really high up. I waited at full draw for what seemed like forever and finally he turned back to get the heck out of there. I let the bow down again, swung the camera back to the last lane I knew he would be in, and drew back AGAIN. (Had he been a pope and young, I would not have tried so hard to get him on camera) The hole that I had to shoot through was only four feet wide so I had to bleat at him to stop him (I hate bleating). He stopped, and as many people had mentioned in another post of mine, target panic set in(not buck fever). I settled the pin behind his shoulder and slammed the trigger hard jerking my wrist at the same time sending the arrow just in front of his hind quarters. I was sick. That’s the one thing I hate about shooting deer is making them suffer. He ran off and then I could see him stand hunched. He eventually got out of sight. Robert met me the next morning at 6:30 and we followed the blood about sixty yards. At one point, I looked up and could see tines down low in some cattails ahead of me. Suddenly they moved. Long story short, I stuck two more arrows in him to make the suffering end quickly and it was over. I have a lot of respect for this animal after the I put it through. He’s definably not my biggest buck, but after buying a house a few weeks ago and finishing up my MBA, my time is limited and I could not be happier. I’ve been disappointed after shooting bucks of this caliber in the past but I could not be happier considering the strategy and the way it all came together.

Nice job TC. I always admire your hunts.

I have a question though. And this is directed at anyone who films.

I see a lot of poor shots on film. Is it worth it to put the deer in agony just so you can make a film??? I think filming is the cause of many poor shots, and the term "lets back out till morning"

Not directed at you TC, just food for thought on filming in general..........
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
