Add another thunderchicken to the list!
Got out of work this morning and decided to try a spot I shot my last turkey at, I was due for some action after staying up all morning the day before and not getting a single gobble or cutting a single track. Looked over aerial map at work and found a good pinch point between two swamps close to where I knew they were roosting.
Set up about a hour before daylight, mistakenly placing my dekes to far from my set up around 50 yds. As soon as sun started coming up I heard a fly down cackle behind me about 50yds, as soon as he hit the ground he started gobbling.
We talked back and forth for about an hour making no progress so I switched calls, as soon as I did he started moving towards me so I went silent. Happened to glance into the field and saw a small buck making his way towards me, he fed until he was about 10yds. From me. About 15 mins. Went by without hearing a gobble, I knew he was making his way towards me which made me nervous because I had this buck slowly catching on to my position. Around the time the buck finally winded me and became on high alert the big gobbler entered the field, as soon as he did the buck blew and crashed through the woodline into the swamp.
The tom didnt seem to mind, he had his mind set on my Jake decoy that was messing with his girl. He made a full sprint towards it ending with a full on Bruce Lee karate kick snapping the mounting pole and putting the Jake down! I sat there in anticipation praying he wouldn't spook from the fake turkeys and then finally....he turned and BOOM! Must have dusted him from the long shot, he started running quartering to me and lifting into flight when I hit him with another round. He made it as far as the swamp line when he hit the tree tops and came crashing down. BIG TOM DOWN!!! 10 1/4 in beard. About 25#s. One spur was a inch and the other was 1in 3/16ths. Happy early thanksgiving to me
