gun kill
just found the beast last month and was able to kill a good middle tn 8pt with your help.
the farm i have been hunting was logged this year and really changed things up for me. the last few years i have killed a good buck for this same spot and had become dependent on this stand. hey it worked and i was killing a bigger one every year. not so much this year!
stayed with this funnel area way too long and just ran out of luck. the doe were still using it but the bucks were going around what had become a loading deck for the loggers. i assumed after the loggers left the farm the spot would get hot during the rut so i held tight and had friends telling i was crazy to leave the area.
as i began to read all the posts here it hit me , move you moron! so the morning of dec 30 was to be my first time to hit a fresh spot that has not been hunted. we made the 3 hr drive a little later because of the front that was pushing out and got there at 10am.
got my climber and all my stuff and hit the trail . had only walked 150 yards from my old spot and jumped up a group of bedded deer on a south facing slope . one of which was a descent 8pt that looked to be a 3year old.
the 8pt stood and let me look at him for about 30 seconds and i took a shot but only shaved some hair. either i just missed , hit a limb or he was taking off just as i shot. either way he was ok and i decided that this was where the deer were skirting my old faithful spot just out of sight of the loading deck and my box blind.
i went to the southern ridge facing the spot where those deer were bedded . it was watching a thick cedar row and began to see deer coming thru soon after climbing a tree. several bucks cruised by including a descent 8 that i will include a picture of . he came under my setup so by now i figure this is where all my bucks have went.
about 5 minutes from the end of legal light i hear a deer coming from the cedar row. he came straight to where i was at which is a good thing since it was getting dark fast in the hollow. about 50 yards out i could see he was at minimum 3 yr old and made up my mind i was going to shoot him. the buck came to the same spot i took the earlier pic of another 8pt and the shot was almost straight down thru the back of his neck and hit his heart . i was able to recover the bullet lodged in the bottom of his chest cavity.
what lesson did i learn? be mobile and first sits can be deadly . much more to learn . thanks for the help!
my old spot that was a great funnel and really had me fooled with all the doe still using it after the loggers left
this guy came by not long after climbing up in the tree.
the new view for the day
sorry but it was late and i had intended to take some good pics the next day but never did. taped him at 123 7/8 not huge but a good tn deer.

Re: gun kill
Nice buck for sure.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
