First Bow Kill

Unread postby Beast-Mode » Mon Jan 05, 2015 3:32 pm

I have been bow hunting for a few years. I had always been holding out for a mature buck since we only get one deer a year here in my area. I shot my my first deer on Nov 29. I got out to the stand around 2:00 My entrance was quiet and I started seeing deer soon after I got setup. First I saw two young does about 60 yards away on the opposite side of the ravine the walked out of view soon after. About an hour later I heard some chasing as had a small 4 pt run a young doe 15 yards upwind of me. He was not a deer I wanted to shoot so I just watched him chase her out of view. Finally with about 20 minutes of shooting light left I see movement about 60 yards in front of me. First I see 1 deer quickly followed by 3 more. I realized it was 4 does with the one in the rear being a big old doe. They came right at me and then veered off into some thick stuff they walked into a more open area single file and when they final doe stepped out into the open I let the arrow fly. I waited in my stand about 15 minutes and got down to look at arrow there was blood on it and did not smell bad. I backed out and gave it 4 hours to be safe. Came back and tracked her not a ton of blood but she did not go far. I caught edge of her heart and she piled up about 50 yards from where I hit her. We paced it off the next morning and it was about a 44 yard shot. A little further than I was hoping but glad it worked out. I have been on the beast for a while now (and been lurking even longer :D ) and have learned a lot. I am looking forward to hopefully sharing more harvest stories in the future.

Here was my arrow.

Here are a few pictures of her when we got her back to the shop.

I often think that big mature does are right up there with killing a big buck. You can't get much past them. Nice job!
