I like many are unbelievably proud for you.

One thing I have learned on dropping them besides shooting them with a 7mag (nearly all hit with that long for caliber bullet drop in their tracks), is to[glow=red]shoot them quartering away, slip in behind one shoulder and take out the opposite shoulder. You lose a spoonful or two of meat, but it is very effective when you hit the blade on the off shoulder. That uses much of the bullets energy before it leaves, if it leaves.[/glow]

You can also head or neck shoot, but that takes more skill than I have to do consistently.

Congrats again and Merry Christmas

That is exactly where I shot this doe. Notice, no blood in the snow, she never took another step.
I was using a 44 Remington mag. The ballistics of my 44 load is almost identical to the load and bullet that is in your muzzle-loader.

I must say though that muzzle loaders puzzle me very much. She was probably not even 50 yards away, I was using 100 grain of triple 7 and a 300 grain powerbelt sabot and she still went about 30 yards. I was hoping with that combination I would drop anything in it's tracks. I guess MZ just do not do that.

It isn't the bullet/load that will drop a deer in its tracks. It is the shot placement. If you want to drop a deer in its tracks you need to take out the "brachial plexus".

Note the alignment with the front leg. It makes it easier to line up the vertical crosshair

This is a pretty good article on the subject:

Congratulations on your harvest. That is a fine looking doe and will provide great table fare for you and your family. You are an inspiration.

Was that video actually supposed to play? I tried in Chrome and IE and it did not play.

That is just a screen shot. If you google it you will find that there is a fair amount of material on that shot.

So if I am reading and looking at the pictures correctly I should aim at the point I marked on mine to drop her in her tracks (the little black dot)?

Probably not the best picture to use since she is laying down but I think this will give me an idea. Thanks.

Also, very interesting that this type of shot has been around for so many years and I never heard of it.

Hard to tell from that picture but it looks right.

I line up my vertical crosshair on the leg and you have to remember that the plexus is higher than you think. I only take it if the deer is near perfect broadside. Otherwise I go for the lungs and aim for my arrow/bullet exit.

I hope that you get an opportunity to try it this year.
