Public Land Rifle 8 Pointer - with Video

Unread postby bowhunter15 » Mon Nov 24, 2014 4:10 pm

I shot an 8 pointer at this location in 2011, passed on one in 2012, and hadn't been there since. With a SW wind, I walked into my old waypoint well before light and hung my stand in a tall double pine, about the only one clear enough to hang the Lone Wolf. Only about 5 minutes into light, I could see a deer emerge through the pine thicket. It was still too dark for video, but I wasn't about to pass up meat for the freezer. That was the primary reason I decided to buy the firearm tag. I could see tines, but wasn't concerned about how big they were. He was in my scope at 40 yards, but it was so thick I decided to wait for him to hit a small opening. 5 yards short, he turned and walked straight away. I thought about taking a shot in the back of the neck, but it was just too thick and I didn't feel comfortable with it. I sat back down as he disappeared. Not a minute later, I looked up to see him once again headed towards the opening. At that point there was no time to grab the camera and turn it on; I only had a few seconds, so I grabbed the rifle, stood, and leaned against the tree next to me for stability. As he hit the opening, I squeezed the trigger, and remember seeing the muzzle flash through the scope... a good indication that I didn't flinch.

He started weaving through the pines, headed for the thickest of cover. I cycled the bolt, but the scope was constantly full of branches as I followed him. I squeezed the trigger again, hoping to get lucky, but all I got was a click. I hadn't pulled the bolt back far enough to eject the shell and was attempting to shoot a spent round. After a long 30 minute wait, I got down and found blood. As I weaved through the cover, I could see him laying, not 50 yards from the point of impact. The bullet had passed through the near shoulder, both lungs, and liver - perfect placement for the angle.

Since this spot has produced multiple times for me, I decided to detail what I believe makes it such a good spot in the video.

Cool.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Good video as always.

I loved the part about not putting in the real topo since 22 cars in the parking lot was enough.
