Rat Slayer and the ladder buck...

Unread postby dan » Mon Nov 24, 2014 10:33 am

Doing some drives yesterday and put a good buck past my Son James, better known as Rat Slayer. He did well, and we found the buck after a 100 yard blood trail. Notice the ladder in the back ground... It has been one of our best stands for doing drives in cattails and we haul it all over on each drive now... Matter of fact, I shot a doe that dressed 160 on the next push. Only two deer shot, and both were killed out of the ladder... Big bucks in public marshes don't like trees and dry ground. You can't shoot them if you can't see them, and thats where the ladder comes into play.

You were right first picture didn't do this guy justice. Much better pic for size of this buck. Congrats again to James.

 Any history with this buck? Was he in a known bedding area? Any useful knowledge gained?

Nice return of the Rat Slayer.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

My journal has a lot of that info in it... I had hunted there earlier this year with bow, and new a good one was in the area close by, but it appeared he was coming from an area behind me... I kept that in the back of my mind and we drove that section when guns opened up... I saw a finger of brush jutting into the cattails and said "the buck is going to be bedded right there" and that is exactly where he jumped up, and Jamie was in the hot seat. 8-)

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
