Hill Country Buck

Unread postby JAB » Fri Nov 07, 2014 8:30 am

This season's been a series of ups and downs like many are. During the early season I hadn't been seeing very much but just kept plugging away with the hopes that if I did good things would eventually happen. After the weather cooled the action began to pick up. We must have had some does come into heat a little early on the property because the action recently has been really good. We've been seeing some smaller bucks running around and some really nice ones that it just didn't work out on.

I take some time off this week each year and decided that I was going to shoot the next good buck that presented a good shot. I sat most of the day yesterday but didn't see a deer the whole day. The temperature dropped today and the winds switched giving us (my dad and I) good off wind set ups. At 7:00 I saw a buck headed my way and quickly decided that if he gave me a shot I was going to take him. He did just that and at 10 yards I let the arrow fly, he bolted straight down the hill and thought I saw him go down. I texted dad and told him about the encounter. We decided that he would head over in a couple hours giving him a chance to hunt a little longer. At 9:00 I climbed down and slowly made my way over to where I thought he was, I could see that he had died right where I thought. At that time Dad made his way over and we went to get him, always something fun to experience together. My deer seem to end up at the bottom of a valley or a drainage ditch but this one was right by our access trail with a short down hill drag to the truck, perfect!

Congratulations to everyone who have gotten their deer and good luck to those still out there!

Dandy buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
