My wife's 1st bow deer

Unread postby Lockdown » Wed Oct 15, 2014 2:12 am

Here's my wife's first bow deer. I had the blind brushed in REALLY well as I was set up really close to the trail to try and get her an easy shot. We were set up about 100 yards from bedding on the edge of a swamp with the corn field 600-700 yards away. I knew things were going to happen fast as the trail curved around behind the blind and we had no visibility from that direction. Right at prime time we both thought we heard a rustle in the grass. Before we knew it the buck was front and center in our shooting window... he was moving fast and on a mission. He was about 5 yards when he noticed the blind. Alisha had quite an adrenaline pump going on and froze while the buck was staring at us.

<a href="http://s42.photobucket.com/user/Lockdown82BS/media/alishasinblind_zpscde5bd19.png.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e310/Lockdown82BS/alishasinblind_zpscde5bd19.png" border="0" alt=" photo alishasinblind_zpscde5bd19.png"/></a>

After 6 or 7 seconds, the buck jumped 10 yards to our left and stopped. We had no shot but Alisha wasn't ready yet anyway. He didn't stand there long, then he bounded back into one of the lanes and stopped at 17 yards. My wife was clearly nervous and had trouble getting her release clipped on to her string loop. Meanwhile the buck is on HIGH alert standing broadside. It's taking Alisha forever to get situated, but I encouraged her and said "Okay draw back... you're doing great.." she drew back and said "Is he 15 or 20?" I told her 20 as her bow was shooting an inch or two low at 20 yards. After a few seconds she pulls the trigger and to my dismay I see the arrow enter way back near the tenderloin area. To say my wife was freaking out is an understatement. "Where did the arrow hit? I feel like I got him! Holy that was crazy! Oh my god if we don't find him I'm going to cry we need to watch the footage so I can see where I hit him!"...

She told me when she first started shooting that if she ever wounded one and didn't find it she would cry. Well after watching the footage and seeing the shot placement my 20 weeks pregnant and emotional wife had tears flowing big time. I'm thinking I'm in for an all night track job and on top of that it was threatening rain. "I feel horrible... I'm not sure if I want to hunt anymore after this." She was down in the dumps and deflated. "We're never going to find him are we." I didn't think we would but I tried to be positive.

The strange thing was, I thought I heard him crash. He either busted through some really thick branches or fell over. We looked for blood and 20 yards from impact was blood. Then we found a pretty good amount of blood. We followed blood for 30 yards and I was happy with what I saw. It was not what I was expecting. When we watched the footage I was thinking we had a chance that she hit the femoral arteries. We backed out and I called a friend to come and help. An hour later it started sprinkling... due to the amount of blood and how easy it was to follow, I was pretty confident the deer was down but my wife refused to get her hopes up. I prepared her for the worst just in case.

We went back and continued on the blood trail. It was pretty easy to follow and in spots there was blood on both sides of the trail. The farther we went the more confident I was that he was dead. We only lost blood once for a few minutes when he changed direction in the thicket. He didn't make it 100 yards. To say my wife was ecstatic is a poor way to describe it! She literally jumped for joy. Later when we talked about it she said she didn't think she followed thru when she shot. I stressed that to her while practicing, but lesson learned. It was a pretty awesome experience! Like I said this was her first bow deer, and 2nd deer ever. I've taken her hunting 4 times and she's killed 2 bucks! I really enjoyed taking a break from trophy hunting and getting back to the basics of deer hunting. I've killed 47 deer and helped quite a few people get deer, but this is one of my best memories.

She just text me that two guys that work at the hospital were giving her crap about her buck still having milk whiskers. That and if the deer was any bigger that shot wouldn't have killed it. What is wrong with people?!? (it was a doctor and a guy with some of the best hunting land in MN)... nothing gets under my skin more than someone with prime land criticizing other hunters! Unbelievable.

Very cool. Congrats to your wife.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

They are just jealous because their wives don't hunt. Will always be door knobs in the world.....,

She shot a great deer and should be proud.
