Man, I can't imagine trying to manhandle a moose after manhandling an elk or two which are only half the size lol. Congrats on a freezer full!!

Love your reports. I couldn't imagine being in the true 'wilderness' like that. It is hard to get more than 2 hours from a major city down here…
Sounds like you found a good hunting partner, hope you guys share many great hunts in the future.
Congrats.

Yeah, this moose was a two 1/2 year old which would probably put him at the same size as a large elk. If he had been bigger we could have still pulled him in but we would have been quartering him in the water. The amount that a bull will bulk up from 2-3 years old is quite bit, I think 3 years is about the perfect age to shoot them cause the meat is still really good and there is a lot of it. A whole year of eating stringy slow cooker roasts off an old moose can make a guy re-think how often he wants to kill a big one.
Although using a canoe to hunt such a big animal is not without its challenges the recoveries are generally fairly easy. I'd rather do some wading than pack one on my back any kind of distance. My main problem with this moose was having to get within arms reach of him minuets after he fell over. As I said I had a close call with one in the past and I'm pretty careful on how I approach a downed moose now. I think reading the moose and handling the moments after the shot is fired and the moose is dead correctly is a bit of an art and can sometimes be critical.
They say millwrights can fix anything except a broken heart, but I've even got a tool that can do that!
