Private land doe
Wednesday October 1st was my opener for archery deer. I sat up for buck and didn't see a thing. Thursday night brought variable winds in my area so I decided to do a doe hunt. I set up on the edge of a beechnut knob where it meets a thick nasty creek bottom. Usually early season this is a good spot to catch a doe feeding during daylight hours. I believe they feel comfortable so close to the thick cover. I planned on hunting on the ground in my ghillie suit and decided since I was hunting doe I would sacrifice a little concealment in trade for comfort so I brought a small stool to sit in. I placed the stool in between two trees that grew close together in an attempt to blend in. After sitting for a couple hours I spotted a couple doe making there way to me through the creek bottom. Once they hit the beechnut knob they instantly started to feed. They were only about 30 yards from me, but I couldn't get a shot due to a lot of brush and small saplings along the transition line. It took them a good 15 minutes to make their way closer and they both glanced in my direction several times. I was pretty impressed with how well the ghillie suit seemed to be working which helps with my confidence in using it for buck. Finally I had a shot opportunity at about 15 yards and after drawing my bow I blatted to get the lead doe to stop walking. Of course she stopped directly behind a sapling offering me no shot. After about a minute of scanning the area, she took a couple more steps toward me. This opened up her vitals and I tucked my 20 yard pin tight behind her shoulder. After the shot she turned around and ran full bore into the creek bottom. She ran pretty fast and hard, but I heard her go down about a 100 yards away. After a 15 minute wait, It only took me about 10 minutes to find her, she left a pretty good blood trail. I hit her directly behind her left shoulder and the arrow exited about 16 inches behind the opposite shoulder since she was quartering to me a bit. It's nice to get some venison in my freezer since I only have a few packages left from last year.

Good job! Did you make your Ghillie? Just curious, really. I made one but it's heavy. I may modify it for weight. Great work again and thanks for posting. I love reading these.

Re: Private land doe
Thanks gentlemen.
Motivated, my ghillie is the kill suit sapper. You can read about it in the Equipment Talk forum in a thread titled "what ghillie to buy". Its the mesh version and pretty lightweight and breathable.
Superseal, I have killed most of my deer on the ground. I prefer it to treestands, but have struggled getting spotted, hence the new ghillie.

Yes, it was a complete pass through. It's all the way to the left in my quiver. Can I ask why you asked?

Good job Terry! I love close encounter ground kills. For me personally the feeling from those type of kills are so exciting. That's a yummy looking doe
