Finally

Unread postby Haus86 » Wed May 14, 2014 12:10 pm

I have been trying to kill a turkey for several weeks now. Earlier in the season I lost a tom after I shot him low with my bow. Following that hunt, I have had a difficult time closing the deal. It seemed like when I would go here, then they would go there, and then I would go over there, and they would go over here.... This morning I decided to get down on a creek bottom below the bluffs where they frequently roosted. I sat for quite some time and only heard a couple of gobbles. After some time, my but started to hurt, I had to pee, and I wanted to pick mushrooms, so I stood up and to my surprise there was a tom off in the distance strutting with a few hens. He was in the middle of a large pasture that borders a creek and is surrounded by steep, rocky ridges. I made my move, and every time they moved behind a tree, I would slowly close the distance. They eventually got behind a rocky point and I was able to cover ground fast. The tom strutted back out into the open at about 80 yards, so I froze. In the mean time, I heard a gobble sound off from across the pasture. Moments later, there was another tom running full speed at the strutter. They did a dance, and eventually the new tom ( the one I would eventually shoot) moved off towards the hens around the rocky point, while the original tom continued to strut in the pasture. I knew that if I climbed the rocks and peeked over the point, I would be able to get a shot off at the strutting tom. When I had the chance, I made my move and started climbing the rocks. When I got to the top, I began scanning for the strutter, and to my surprise the other tom was only 15 yards away, and he spotted me. He was mildly spooked, and took off on a fast walk, bobbing his head the whole way. I followed him with my shotgun and when he hit an opening, I let it eat.
