Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on hunts. I appreciate all the kind words guys. Can't wait for this fall to read all the stories as they come in.

Buckeye, very impressive. I've enjoyed your comments on another forum, but have never seen any of your deer. Thanks for sharing!

When that big buck walks towards you this fall, concentrate on your breathing and get your eyes off his antlers.

Uber thread and some great bucks killed for sure. Thanks for sharing.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Ive tried hunting some reclaim strip mines and as you noted, the topo maps arent much help at all. Thanks for sharing the posts, really like that obvious flat/bed location you showed in the shaded image of the strip mine.

Re: A few of my bow kills, public and private.
2014 started very slow, I usually have good early season action. However, this year I did not see a buck, any buck until the 21st day of the season. From there on out I had more buck action than I can ever remember. I was seeing good bucks (mostly all public) and passed shot opportunities at some real nice ones, I passed the biggest buck of my life this season on public land. I believe he could have hit 150 inches. I just didn't like the look of the rack. It was heavy and tall, but very narrow. I am really after a bigger frame anymore. To clarify, I am not saying it has to be more inches than it was as that is not the case. Just has to have a look that I like.
I believe it was November 5th (can't recall off the top of my head) a little after 12 noon and I had a good looking buck skirt me just down the hill that I would have loved to have used my tag on. He was traveling from NorthEast to SouthWest between the circled areas where does bed. A little while longer a 6 point yearling did basically the same thing.
Then all was quiet until just before 4pm where I could see a buck slowly walking my way. As he got closer I could tell why he was walking so slowly. He appeared to have been gored by another buck or maybe hit by an arrow at the very back area of the stomach, nearly his back leg.
I will be honest for many years I would have let this buck limp by looking for another one. Now that I am a bit older and have had a couple kids I am softer than I used to be. I released the arrow and it met its mark. Now the story gets interesting... At the shot he rolled all the way down that hill and over a 60 foot drop highwall (the brown fuzzy stuff is a shear cliff strip mine dropoff). It took my buddy and I all night to retrieve this buck. The butcher said all the meat was a waste from the injury and infection. He wasn't sure what the wound was from.
The next interesting part was I took it to the taxi for him to make a euro for me with the skull. His shop help capped it as to prepare it for a shoulder mount. Didn't want a shoulder mount, and still don't. He is going to mount it to one of those fake euro skulls for me.

I drew a poor representation of the wind direction on the map in the last post. It was more WSW than W as shown.
Updated public land map.
