Lucky Charm buck
I have been in a deer drought this year, but my daughter was the lucky charm that broke it! I took her out for our first hunt together since early October. She has hunted w/ me several times a year since she was four. As a 'mature' seven yr old, however, she has shown less interest this year at the mention of deer hunting together. So I was excited when she told me she wanted me to take her hunting Sunday afternoon. Who could say no to that request?? Winds were perfect to hunt a food plot in the center of a fifteen acre field I had been saving for an opportunity just like this.
There was no Beast style hunting, just doing what we could to keep the enthusiasm up and toes warm. We got to the stand with about an hour of light left, but seemingly could do nothing right. We were on the ground with what turned out to be some swirling winds, we made noise, had to move around a lot, we were dropping things on accident, etc.! I thought for sure there would be no deer to show up tonight. I went so far as to ask if she wanted to leave early to keep from getting colder. She said, "No! I want to see a deer. I want you to kill a big buck!" Hah! No pressure there!
Well, nothing was happening until right at dark, when I saw several does ease out of the timber and into the fallow grass to check the field. Quickly they scooted into the food plot. I was back and forth as to whether or not to go ahead & shoot right then. However, I kept remembering her words about a big buck. I waited for what seemed like an eternity - about five minutes - when the last doe bolted into the food plot. I knew something was up. It was nearly too dark to see but I made out a dark mass moving toward the plot with my eyes….I knew what I was looking at and told my daughter a buck was coming in. I saw a big smile and eyes that got as big as saucer plates! Sitting next to her, I could feel her legs begin to shake w/ excitement! Slowly, I had to pick up ear muffs, hand them to her, and let her get them on her head. Then I got the gun ready and told her I was about to shoot. I got a 'thumbs-up' as a reply.
Boom! The buck lurched then took off on a dead run. I jacked in another shell, found him, and had him in the crosshairs, but he dropped about thirty yards from the shot! I looked at my daughter - I haven't seen a bigger smile on her face in a long time!
I count this as one of my best hunts of all time! Great memories were made this evening…and I think I have a deer hunter!
Note: Dan posted a pic in 2013 Buck Kill Line Up; further, a great deal of information from this site directly influenced decisions I made that helped make this such a successful hunt! Many thanks to all!

Re: Lucky Charm buck
Great story and dandy buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Awesome story!
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
