This year's canoe hunt.

Unread postby Exophysical » Tue Dec 10, 2013 10:09 am

I know a little lake nestled high in the Albertan mountains, where if you paddle to the other side you can find a little creek that drains into it. Unlike most mountain creeks this one is fairly slow and deep, at least where it runs into the lake. A canoe can be paddled and poled a fair distance upriver, through a section of the famous Wilmore Wilderness and into the back side of Jasper Park. I finally got around to making that trip this year and hunting it for elk, its a 6 point zone and I got in late. I didn't manage to find a 6 point elk but the hunt itself was amazing enough I figured I'd post some pictures.

This is what the back door to Jasper looks like.

This is it, about 5 miles of valley sandwitched between two parks, from this ridge I could watch the moose and elk go up and down the valley.

This is right on the back side of Jasper, you can get a canoe within about a mile of here and then you have to hike up the river.

This is the closest I got to a 6 point elk.

A wide old moose, killed by wolves.

I never saw this guy, and he didn't bother my camp, but he was in the valley with me the whole time.

I glassed and hiked for about 4 days without much success and I probably wont go back and hunt this valley, but I will definatly be taking my family back there to do some camping next summer.

Very cool pics Thanks for sharing.

Great looking country.

A lot bigger bear tracks than we have in WI. grizz vs black bear.

Is that a whitetail or mule deer track in the same picture with the bear and your boot?
