my families rifle season kills (pictures added)
I held off on posting because I made a mistake an am pretty disappointed in myself. I shot what looked to me like a day cent 2.5 year old buck on Sunday with a rifle as he came down the hill running. Apparently the cold effects judgement or something but after killing the buck I got up to it and saw it had serious ground shrinkage, what I thought was a medium 2.5 year old was really an exceptionally antlered year and a half that given a few more years would have been a dandy. I feel bad for killing the deer and not being happy with it, it is the first time I've ever felt this way. I finally said enough is enough you killed him he deserves respect so I'm done feeling bad and disrespecting him, it is what it is. I'm gonna give the meat to a brother in law who needs meat really bad and then the antlers will be my first European mount. I will post pictures later tonight. My wife shot her first buck on Saturday and her brother got to be there with her and he killed the other Buck that was running with it so that was a cool hunt, she is super excited. Its not a giant but it did exactly what it should have, gotten the heart rate up and made excellent memories, regardless of rack size. My dad hunts on public and killed a very nice doe Saturday, pretty proud of him as he has one heck of a time walking anymore and this deer is the equivalent of a 150" buck for the excitement level and accomplishment feeling as he knows he has the heart but not the legs to do what he used to. I went out and helped him drag it out as there was no way he would have got it out on his own, which was actually a lot of fun! We got a great photo of the 3 deer hanging together and I guess that's what the hunt should be about, quality time with family and memories made that will last forever, regardless of the size of the antlers.

Sounds like a great hunt was had by all.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

While the size of the racks certainly add spice to the weekend recipe, the delicious cream cheese icing on the cake is time spent with family. Enjoy it.

Re: my families rifle season kills
Don't feel bad about killing a small buck Brad. I killed a smaller one with my rifle last year and honestly it rekindled my enthusiasm for the gun season again. Been quite a few years since I killed a buck with the rifle and was very close to giving up the gun season forever. We had some very rough years up north and it just wasn't fun anymore. Glad I didn't quit because yesterday I had an encounter with a slob northwoods buck while tracking.
Congrats to you and your family. Sounds like good memories were made and that's what it's all about!

Re: my families rifle season kills
Brad its gun season and time for family, friends and shooting deer. Nothing wrong with holding out for a big one or smacking a buck for meat. Its your hunt and the main thing is to have fun.
You shot a nice one with the bow and if you want continue holding out for bigger bucks with the bow.
If I see a good 2.5 this weekend with the gun I'm slinging lead and will be tickled happy with him. Its just the stage I'm in withthe gun. Second season bow iI'm holding out for a 3.5 or better........or when the opportunity presents itself maybe not. Lol.

Just got off the phone with the taxidermist, taking the 8 point in for a European mount on Friday. Figured he deserves his spot on the wall just like the the rest of them and this will work out perfect.
