MN's MO Buck

Unread postby MN Slick » Thu Nov 21, 2013 7:24 am

Northern Missouri was good to me again in 2013! I shot this dandy on November 10th at about 4:45. The first few days of the hunt were somewhat slow but the action picked up on November 8th and I started seeing some cruising and chasing involving older bucks. On the morning of the 10th I was in yet another first time set up but knew I was going to have to move about 9 am due to the wind changing from NE to SE. Sure enough the wind started getting squirrely so I bailed and was in a different tree by 9:30. I saw a yearling buck at 11 am and after that I had action about every hour. At about 4:45 I heard something coming through an area which I didn’t expect one to travel so I had no shooting lanes prepared. I quickly searched along his route and found literally one spot I thought I could get an arrow through but it was the size of a volleyball with a tiny twig across the lower third of the opening. Fortunately, I got him stopped in the opening but a rushed shot led to what appeared to be a high lung hit. Somewhat unsure of the hit I slipped out for 5 hours before coming back with a neighbor to track him. It was indeed a high lung hit so the blood trail was sparse and difficult to follow in the CRP grass but after about 200 yds our flashlights lit up an awesome animal down for the count in our CRP.

Good one for sure.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
