My First Rattled in Buck on Public Land
I moved this post to a new thread here for slabbandit.
Hi folks, Found this forum while sitting in my local small town barber shop yesterday reading a Field and Stream article about Dan Infalt. All I get to hunt is Corp of Engineer land and National Forest. Plenty of land but low deer numbers due to heavy poaching and running dogs constantly.
Against advice that "Rattlin' and Gruntin" don't work here" I slipped in close to a field that was bordered by a river and climbed up a gum tree. I did about a 90 sec sequence of light rattling using horns off of 2 year old bucks. My thinking is that a 3 1/2 deer around here is considered probabaly what we can expect to be our most mature deer in the area. I didn't want to sound too big and intimidate the smaller bucks. I also done some grunts on my call. I looked out towards the edge of the field and saw this buck making 2 scrapes. At one time he turned like he was going to go back from where he came from and I hit him with an estrus grunt and shook some sapling leaves next to me and he turned around and walked straight to my tree and presented me with a 10 yd shot. My best bowkill so far.
