Lil Hodag's Bow Kill Doe

Unread postby Hodag Hunter » Sun Oct 20, 2013 3:00 pm

Just got in the house from skinning his doe. Not monster but he is happy.

Like last year deer filter thru our "backyard" all the time but with tons of acorns it's tough to get them in his effective bow range. Seen four right away once in stand but the closest one worked our way was about 60 yards. About 45 minutes later he sees one right under the stand. Snuck up on us in the rain.

Tonight we were in the two man stand that he has to stand on the flip down seat to shoot over the gun rail. With me sitting on the seat I never did see the deer. He motioned he seen one close, drew his bow and let fly. I was a little worried it was this close....about 4 yards when it jumped a little during his draw but he smoked it perfect. Look at the pictures where the arrow penetrated. Deer ran hard about 70-80 yards stopped and flipped right over on it's back. Snapped his arrow and he looks at me and says "Did you just see that!" Cool he says "but just broke one of my arrows!" Don't worry buddy we have tons of them I told him.

He is 12 now and can hunt by himself as long as I am in ear shot range. The night before he hunted by himself with my wife and daughter sitting on the back deck, as I was working late, if Austin yelled for any reason. He saw 5 in two different groups and 3 worked close enough for a shot but he said no broadside shots. This was in a different stand.

He is happy but now holding out for a buck.....spike or fork will do, and/or a larger doe. He gets a extra free doe tag because of the WI youth tag.

Always a fun moment watching the kids drill deer. I'm a proud Dad.

Made the round of phone calls and plan fishing again in the morning. Hoping for a nice musky for him to cap the weekend off.

Nice.
