Nice deer. Just curious how far away would you say your stand was to that bedding area?

The actual bed was still a little bit west of where I marked. Didn't want to include too much in the aerial photo being that it's public land. There is some thick red brush with one tree in the middle and this is where I found the bed. Total distance to my tree is roughly 125 yards. Kinda far away but that little cluster is my only option for sitting in a tree since it is all marsh grass and cattails. Normally I would like to be closer but since it was opening day I figured it would be my best chance since the buck would likely be on his feet earlier.

I'm gonna head back out there one of these coming days and take more pics of the bedding area.

Dewey,
You should set out there with the camera to see what else might be using that bed.
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.

I want to dive in there and check it out so it will likely be ruined for awhile. Late season I will be sitting nearby since that is when I first found the bed. I'm sure another buck will move in pretty quick due to the location and very secure spot to bed.

Thanks Dewey for the apx distance because down here in fl, I thought I was far enough away from the bed when I set up on a deer, but I messed up and ended up being to close when the wind shifted.
Next time I will have to back off a little more .

Did some follow up on the kill site and bedding area of my 2013 marsh buck. I originally posted this on the Live From The Stand thread today but copied it over here to keep with the story. Ignore the time stamps on the next 3 posts since these were copied from this afternoon.

Out doing some detective work where I killed my bow buck opening day. Hoping another buck took over the bed.

Approaching the kill site now. I was sitting in the small white oak left of the large leaning tree.

The bed is located by the trees on the far right of this pic.

Image

The killing tree. The bed is under the tree in the far backgound about 125 yards away.

Image

Getting closer. Bed tree in center but not looking good. No fresh tracks in or out.

Tracks led past primary bed like the deer was checking it out but bed has not been used for awhile or at least since it snowed.

Image

This is the exact bed I believe my buck was bedded in the day I killed him. It's vacant now but early next season I believe it will be used again due to the lack of good security cover outside this particular area.

Place sure looks different from Sept to end of Dec. Cool pics Dewey and good post to go back on an early kill site and check out later in the year.

Great story! I think I'll have to read this 2 or 3 times to digest all of the info.

Well here is the good part and something I don't normally post online. Here is an aerial of the set up and pretty much explains it all. If it helps somebody else kill a buck in a similar situation I would be very happy. I came in from the north to approach my stand. The buck came to me with the wind coming out of the cattails following the transition. After the shot the buck ran straight south quartering into the wind.

I truly loved how my plan all came together exactly how I envisioned it. This is my first beast style kill and first opening day buck. Also first kill out of a LW stand and first kill with my Bowtech Assassin.

He is not a slob like I am usually after but hunting beast style I feel I need to start somewhere for my first kill and work my way up from here. My largest bucks all came from the rut but hope in the future I can get better at killing larger bucks early in the season. This was a great confidence booster and excited for the future.

I guess that pretty much sums it up. Hope you all enjoyed the story.[/quote]

Dewey 1st congrats on your 2013 buck. I've been studying the aerial to use as an example for cyber scouting. From your winter pics the bed tree looked a decent size. Is the "pin" covering it up? What kind of terrain is to the west? Thanx for the great story and pics.
