New Years Buck

Unread postby Haus86 » Thu Jan 03, 2013 1:23 am

I finally got it done last night. This has been the most difficult season I have had in a while. Trespassers, harassing neighbors, and above average hunting pressure made for tough hunting this year. My good buddy from Michigan shot a nice 10 pointer off public, and I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity at a nice 9 pointer in November, but unfortunately I hit him low in the brisket and was unable to recover him. I ended up getting a muzzleloader tag with high hopes of having some decent late season hunting. The last two weeks have been tough. Between my wife, buddy Peter, and I we had limited buck sightings and movement was slow. With time running out, my wife and I were putting all of our eggs into one basket. We had been staying out of a particular spot that gets good late season traffic. Also, the deer tend to move into the south facing ridges in this spot when it gets cold. We waited until we had single digit temps and a good moon phase. As I was walking in I bumped what looked like a bunch of does from an area where they typically don't bed. I was pretty frustrated when I got up into my stand, but I looked forward to enjoying the sun and nice weather. After sitting for awhile, all of a sudden a couple does and fawns came running through past my stand like they had been spooked. I thought maybe a coyote had bumped them, or maybe a buck. About 5 minutes later a lone doe came walking along the same trail from the bedding area. About 15 minutes later I heard footsteps to my left and immediately saw a nice rack. He appeared at 25 yards and was heading straight for me on a trail that would put him at 10 yards. As he walked broadside in front of me, he momentarily stopped and looked up at me. Luckily, he didn't spook and proceeded to follow the trail. I shouldered my gun and waited for him to step into my shooting lane. As he entered my shooting lane, I stopped him, and I shot him at 10 yards. As he run off I could see blood spraying several feet out of his side and I knew he would expire. He ran about 100 yards before piling up at the bottom of the ridge. It was a great end to the 2012 season, and an awesome start to 2013. I couldn't be happier as hard work had finally paid off.

Thanks guys. I put in so much time for this opportunity. More time than would be considered healthy as everyone on this website knows. It was icing on the cake after all of the great memories shared with family and friends this season. I'm definitely learning and evolving as a hunter. The trophy is not the most impotant thing for me anymore, and that feels geat!

Good job on the nice buck. You just never know when it's going to happen.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
