S FL Public Buck

Unread postby PK_ » Sat Nov 24, 2012 4:15 am

I shot this buck on Oct 6. I climbed into my stand at 4pm just after a thunderstorm rolled through. I spotted a doe in a small clearing surrounded by heavy cover, upwind and out of range. I caught a glimpse of antlers, watched for 5 mins and couldn't take it any longer. I mentally marked a small bent pine near the doe. I slipped out of the stand, circled a small swamp to approach downwind and with cover. I got to where I could see the small pine, no deer. I took a small step forward and snapped a twig. Immediately I noticed the doe come to full alert about 30 yards in front of me. I scan everywhere but don't see the buck, I know he is there. I catch movement out of my peripheral vision and about crapped when I noticed he is on the other side of the bush I am next to. He had his ears laid back in the tending posture totally focused on the doe. I probably could have reached across and touched him with the barrel of my muzzleloader. He never took another step.

Left side was snapped off, otherwise he would have been decent. Old deer, definitely on the decline. 155lbs live.

Thanks guys, he is a decent buck for that area. I was targeting a couple bucks that were more impressive, but with limited time to hunt that area I was not about to be picky. Plus when I got a close look at him and saw how old he was, I felt fortunate to be able to harvest my first 'senior' buck. It is a hunt and memory I will never forget.

Really my stalk on this deer wasn't that great. I got lucky that there was enough wind and heavy cover to muffle my clumsy steps. Not to mention this buck was oblivious to the world around him.
