Halloween Target Buck Down and Out!
As I had mentioned in an earlier thread, a nice buck I had a "run-in" with last year was back as evidenced by cluster of rubs on a particular high oak ridge in some N. Wis Big Woods country. Since I knew where he was bedding, I set up different this year. placing stand on side of ridge just below crest, about 150-200 yards and out of sight from bedding. A narrows of ridge combined with old logging grade cut thru hill funneled the deer here thru a very narrow area, and I was set for 15-25 yard shot. I needed Northerly and/or westerly winds.
I arrived and set up tent camp Sat, Oct 27, and started hunting Sunday, but we were getting southerly winds so I impatiently hunted a couple other spots waiting for the wind swith which finally came on Tuesday, Oct 30th. I hunted from hour after sunup to noon and again 3pm-close Tuesday and saw one spike. Wed, Oct 31, I hunted till noon again with no action. I went in Wed evening "full of confidence" that the odds should be starting to favor me .
About 5pm, I heard deer rustling the oak leaves about 80 yards from my stand, then I spotted a doe, and a buck "birddogging" her around the ridge side and generally headed my way. After 10 minutes the doe worked her way to within 12 yards of my tree, coming right thru the funnel trail. He stayed back about 20 yards , moving to 3 different positions within 25-35 yards from me. I watched him raise his head, tilt it back and do a grunt-wheeze 4-5 times, keeping his eye lose on the doe. Finally he was at 25 yards and his next move should put him right in my 15 yard shooting lane. With his 1st step I drew and held. He was slighly quartered toward me so I held pin high on shoulder and drilled him. Hit looked perfect with about 14 inches penetration, but he just stood there like nothing happened and walked another 10 yards , stopped quartered away. I quickly loaded an arrow and pierced him from ham to oposite shoulder. He walked 30 yards and tipped over.
Examination showed my 2nd arrow wasn't needed but better played safe! He dressed just over 200, is 8 even points with rough score just over 130. My taxidermist aged him at 51/2 to 7 1/2 with 5 1/2 most likely. This was my most exciting hunt since taking my first "big one" over 30 years ago. Watching him for 30 minutes before the shot was "unnerving" to say the least. So finally making the good shot was greata, felt 18 again!!! This is why I will be out there again next year, and on and on!!! It doesn't get any better.

Congrats on the nice buck.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
