Minnesota guided bear hunts

Unread postby Bearman13 » Fri Feb 07, 2014 6:11 am

We have a few openings for the 2014 fall bear hunt in northern MN. We live, and work where we guide. We are state and federal licensed outfitters. We are INSURED also.
We also do wolf hunts over bait. We are based out of Grand Marais, MN on the Gunflint Trail.

Fully guided and DIY hunts.

I would enjoy meeting you next time I am up that way... I have a lot of friends who always ask about hunting with me up there, but I just can't take anymore friends.

Checked out the website and you have a nice variety of hunt options. I will keep you in mind if I ever decide to bear hunt up in that area. Always wanted to hunt Superior National Forest for bear or deer.

How long does it take for a non resident to draw a tag or are they available every year?

Sadly it's now gonna be a for sure 2-3 draw for tags. I haven't heard if the number is dropping again for the fall or not. We try to take everyone on a bait run also. We actually try and teach people how to hunt bears. Your paying to learn as well as hunt. Trust me I've been on guided hunts that were disasters.

Dan anytime. I don't get as far over the sawbill way. We hunt super remote. I've run dang near 100% kill last 6 seasons. I'm not the kinda guide who pushes to shoot the first bear or make you wait for a bruiser. It's whatever the client want to do.

I'll say I have a good reputation in the trapping and bear guiding community in northern MN. I intend to keep it. I'm a state wolf trapper also.

Dan, those freeloaders you've dealt with know to keep distance from me. 2-3 of those guys have given 31 guides a bad name. I always tell people when they call if the guide doesn't live in the area I'd be leery. Not saying good non local guides aren't around, my experience has shown it can be more of a problem.

Sorry the picture portion is sloppy on the site. I did it myself, I'm a logger, trapper and guide not a website builder.

Also, if your interested, Carol and Dan Jr are very good at building websites and could rebuild yours to look a lot more professional. They don't charge much... Maybe we could trade for wolf hunting.

Very hard to get a tag. I had two hunters for the early season. Which was during the deer rifle season. Wolves were hitting the baits but we had no kills. Were still trying to get the hunting tactics all dialed in. They're very smart and In one year here they knew they were being hunted. That's why trappers are doing better.

The first year I baited and cam pictured them. The set ups are 100 plus yard shots from natural ground blinds or pop ups brushed in. I like to get up on a hill and look down on he bait site.

Couple important things I've learned.

1.Long shots
2. Deer and moose are best baits followed by beaver.
3. Early morning and late evening are when activity was. And super late.
4. Odds are much better in the late season hunt.
5. One mistake and they're gone.
6. They have a big circuit. You can't kill what's not around.

I've talked with a couple outfitters in canada and got input. It's a whole different ball game up there.

I noticed when running the bear baits up that way that I would have a wolf find my bait ( I run cameras on all my baits ) and come in every day till I rebait then he dissapears... They seem super sensitive. I have only had one ever come to a bait while I was there.

Last fall we had wolves pop up while the guys were on the baits. That happens a couple times every year. And the cameras show more and more wolves on baits. I've had them run 500# boars off baits until the wolves move on.

I don't let bears go overnight if at all possible the wolves will get on them. The associate gun shot with kill up here.
Two falls ago I had a lady shoot a beauty. I knew wolves were on the bait. She said within 10 minutes 3 came in. By the time I got there the wolves were still milling around.

That's another reason we don't field dress bears in the woods.
