Reference pics for guys who have been mounting there own

Unread postby Jeff G » Sat Apr 11, 2015 12:32 am

There have been a few guys mounting there own this year. Your off to a great start. Keep at it. Here is a mount I just finished for a customer. I thought some of you might want to have a few photos for reference. This is not a competition mount, just a standard commercial mount.

Image

Look at hair patterns, brisket, ears, ear butts, throat patch, the pad of the nose. these all fall in specific spots on all deer.

Image

Don't go crazy with rolls and wrinkles on long hair/fall harvest deer. Early bow kills have much more, but put in a few to add details. This can be done with glue as well.

Image

A deers nose is not just plain old black. it has brown, grey, pink, a dusting of black. Nodules are built up using mode pod, then polished to show the fine hairs. the picture might look black, but when you look at it up close, you see the details.

Image

eyes are not circle, almost almond shape.

If you have any questions, feel free to post. Good luck to anyone mounting there own! If you have a buck in the freezer still, bring it down to Trudell outdoor adventurers and we can help you out.

Thanks, been doing it for a few years. Learned one on one from a really good taxidermist.

Looks great. Nice of you to share. I guess you get what you pay for, or at least hopefully you do.

Off topic, but I like the idea of leaving the tag on.

Not to make any arguments but I was taught never to use another guys mounts as a reference. Always use live or picture of live deer.

Thanks for these reference pics.. I have thought about trying to do one next year. I need to figure the cost of materials and tools first though.

That's not what I was getting across. I no longer do it. But I have been thru all of it and made some problems by thinking someone else mounts was right and it got me in bad places. Just saying.

Since I was not offended by this, I'll play mediator. I think he was trying to offer some tips with reference points on his mount. He wasn't saying copy my mount.

So..., use a live picture and use some of Jeff's tips. There, all better, now you guys hug it out.

I am just fine and I hope Jeff is to. I onow what he was trying to do and it is all fine. I guess if you want to look at his for reference go for it. It is all what you want to get out of it. No hard feelings.
