For Whitetails I agree with you Ed. For African Lions, Rhino's, and other critters I have no experience with, I would go with a professional for the experience. I don't think there is any way other than guided to legally hunt them in the wild.
Its not "hunting" the way "we" think of hunting, its more like experiencing a different region and way of life. I would kind of wonder about a guy if he had 20 Rhino's mounted from guided hunts, or 20 ostrich... But, this guy goes once, experiences it, then moves on. When he tells story of his hunts, the culture, and the people it makes me wish I was there...
I will never put down another hunter, or look down at him for what he hunts, or where he travels, or the manner in which he hunts, as long as he does it in a legal, and ethical manner.
We are all in it for the same reasons, though what we hunt, or how we hunt are different.

none the less that is a very impressive trophy room. if i had the money or the chance to hunt an exotic i would love to go after a cape buffalo with a bow. i dont care if the guide put the animal in your lap and pulled your bow back for you its got to be one heck of a rush knowing that this animal could take you out in a blink of an eye.

Cape Buffalo, Kodiak Brown Bear or African Lion!!

You gotta respect guys like Fred Bear that did this with a recurve or long bow guided or not.

Couple of wussies for clients in that cape buffalo video. I would have ran up to the buffalo put a bullet in it's head. Image
You cannot invade mainland America. There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.
