WTB Straight-Walled Rifle for Iowa

Unread postby JakeJD » Tue Oct 13, 2020 6:51 am

Hello Gents. My oldest son (10 y/o) is wanting to try deer hunting next year. I am looking for a straight-walled rifle that is legal in Iowa (avoid hassle of my muzzleloader).

Anybody around here have a suitable rifle for Iowa? Also open to suggestions on the cartridge, i.e. 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, 444 Marlin, etc.? Until today, I did not realize straight-walled rifles were legal here (did not realize there was such a gun).

Cheers, Jake

A .444 and 45-70 are gonna be too much recoil for a 10 year old in my opinion, but the .444 will be slightly less recoil and shoot a little flatter than the 45-70. If you do decide to go that route a .444 made by Handi Rifle is without a doubt the best shooting gun I own. Paired with the 265 grain leverulition ammo made by Hornady, it’s accurate and will put a hole the size of a baseball in a mature deer.

This.

For a 10 year old I would lean towards a pistol caliber like 357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, or 45 LC

You can pick up a savage or CVA in 350 legend for a really reasonable price. Just got the savage axis in camo with a scope for $499. I think the black one is like $350.

Just out of curiosity what brand/model did you get for your kids I am just starting to look for my boy. Hadn’t considered the 350 legend until seeing this thread, seems like it may be a good fit.

My kids have been shooting a lever action 44. The 1st 2 years we shot 44 Specials and though they worked the blood trails sucked. This year we bumped to magnums and it's been a lot better. I have been looking to get a 350 Legend just for the kids... they're great shooters. My daughters started at age 9 and my son at age 7 with the 44.

I shoot a 45-70 and it's like hitting a deer with Thor's hammer.

FWIW:
I have a Savage Axis in 30-06 and it is a terrific shooter. Sub MOA once it is properly broken it. But it won’t do it out of the box. The trigger was terrible as was the scope. I put a Timmey trigger (about $100) and a good/not great scope on it. A Nikon 3X9X40MM IIRC.

I knew that going in when I bought the rifle. The scope went on a .22 plinker so it didn’t “go to waste”.

The Axis II has a much better and adjustable trigger.
