WANTED - PACK FRAME

Hello Guys,

I'm planning on going on a Montana Elk Hunt this fall I'm going with a good friend and some family. I'm in need of a decent pack frame. We will be hiking everyday and camping out of our packs for at least a week so looking for a good size pack. Trying to keep this reasonable for cost so trying to find used equipment. May also be interested in binos and GPS.

This is a cheap and useful option i went with:

I still use this frame all the time. Though it may not be very good for the type of hunt you are doing. Figured i would post it up

You may find used gear here. Plus the elk hunting info is great. I would seriously consider getting the University of Elk Hunting online course. It's the best compilation of elk hunting knowledge I've ever seen! Period!!! Well worth every penny. It truly covers EVERYTHING!!! I consider Corey the Dan Infalt of elk hunting. Down to earth good guy!

My $.02 regarding packs is buy the best you can afford if you plan to do such hunts in the future. If I was to buy one today with money being no factor, it would come down to a Kifaru or an Exo internal frame.

When I bought one, it was primarily for packing deer out of the mountains where I hunt in TN. I haven't hunted with it on my back, but leave it at the truck for after the shot. With that said, it easily fits the bill for occasional western trips and I'll be using it this fall for Wyoming pronghorn. Here's what I have:

X2 on the hunt talk forum. I've been a member for a couple of years now and I am soaking up everything I can learn for my trip out west in a couple of years. It is the only site other then the Beast I have found that is a no BS, no name calling site and super helpful with western style hunting from gear to tactics to conservation. Randy Newberg is a stand up dude He owns and runs the site (Big Fin is his username), but like this site there are a ton of knowledgable guys on there willing to help with draw units, gear, diy questions and such.

Your pack will make or break you. Make sure it properly fits your torso. Then make sure it still fits your torso fully weighted down. Straps will also loosen while weighted down and hiking.

Yep. In addition, learn how to adjust it to best fit you. Any old pack is fine with 40 pounds in it, but everything changes when you add a load of meat. Kifaru has great videos on this. At the time, I choose that pack linked above because of its adjustability. It can fit a fairly wide range of guys. Like I said, though, it's a get-by solution and not what I want for the future because I hope to take a western trip on an annual basis.

DIY sportsman did a video a while back talking about the ALPS outdoorz commander pack frame. Id look into his comments on that before spending too much money on something else, especially since you'll likely be purchasing other gear.
