Afternoon Hunt Question

Unread postby Ill_make_you_famous » Wed Dec 05, 2018 12:48 pm

For the past couple years I have hunted 100% mornings. I haven’t killed anything yet and have only had one deer in bow range and very limited sightings in several sits so I’ve decided to switch it up. I’m hunting public for the first time this year and it’s been frustrating to say the least. So when you guys hunt an afternoon in the late season, what time would you say you’re in your stand fully set up by?

Two hours before sunset at a minimum. That gives you 2.5 hours of legal shooting. Which means for me I have selected my tree about 15 minutes before that because that’s how long it takes me to get settled. And sometimes it takes me 20 minutes to pick my tree once I find my spot.

I feel like anything less than that is cutting it too close. Do I do it because stuff happens? Yes. But it never works for me and every time I’ve had good sits I was set up 3+ hours before sunset.

Maybe it’s luck? Maybe it’s nexessry. And I consider myself a baby beast at best. Interested in what others say.
