I think I used 4... If you watch the footage where my voice over asks if you can see the stand, the stand was placed right on top of a bunch of grape vines at the lowest spot it could be.

Just curious Dan, did you find any doe beds in the area? If so, where were they located around the buck bed?

Trying to relate this to a similar spot I hate in my area. Thanks.

my only question/comment /critique is to why the video quality is so poor? cheap $100 camera take better video lol

The host compresses the footage... It is much clearer when viewed on the local cable channel, and will be much clearer on the video's.

which host are you using?

youtube and vimeo allow HD upload or little to no compressing. it takes longer to upload but its worth it.

There is aerious lack of does in the area do to over harvesting because of E.A.B.
But, back when does were in the area, they usually bedded in the treeline I was hunting out of, but a little farther down. Now, the only doe bedding I am seeing is on the other end of the marsh.

Vimeo compresses the videdos.

the original video of episode 3 is:
1920x1080 ,3.70 GB

and vimeo changes it to
352x240, 304.55MB

that is a differance of almost 550%

I meant *hunt in my previous reply. My fault if that sounded weird.

Anyways, the area I had in mind is exactly like you said with the does bedded in the treeline where I would hunt out of. With that in mind would you have approached this stand in Episode 3 differently if there were doe beds close by?

Most of the time the does bedded further down in this spot.

I may choose to sit farther back, or a different rought if I am worried about bumping does...
But sometimes, you have one option. If I am worried about a doe being bedded near a buck bed where I want to hunt and there are no other options, I go in early. Most of the time the doe sneaking out, or even running off will not make the buck jump ship on his bed. He will just get very alert as to what is going on around him. So it may take waiting for the area to calm down before setting up, and it may take being at the tree early enough that the buck has time to forget about the incidence.

Just thought I would use this hunt to point out what I call a "safe zone" This is the area around the bucks bed where he feels comfortable moving in daylight. Its the area where the buck feels he would know if it was penetrated. He would think he would hear, smell, or see a predator if it got into this zone...
Before anybody goes haywire, The lines are obviously a guess and are approximate... and I should of probably included the area behind his bed, but I don't believe the buck travels that way, so its a mute point. Staging should be at the edge of the safe zone.
Safe zone is basically where I expect a mature buck to move in daylight. My evening set up would be right on the edge of the safe zone, where it meets staging...
A younger buck might get farther. The buck in the video was moving early enough that he may have made it to the corn field in shooting light... Safe zone size will expand on certain weather conditions, or moon phases... Make sense?

I couldn't tell for sure but maybe the animal moved at the shot. So I thought it was excellent to present the issue of how most of the shows choose to gloss over a bad hit, instead of using it as a learning experience. There's so much to talk about in choosing to let an arrow fly, like was mentioned forcing a shot, maybe shooting too far, etc the posture/alertness of the animal.

The other thing I really liked, is how close Dan setup on this animal. People think it can't be done and they'll setup 2-300 yards of the bedding and they're not even in the game. You can't deny he set up close you could see antlers, he has it there on tape. So yeah the approach matters and you got to have your setup down and take your time. But man he made that set then and there, wasn't even a preset and he pulled it off. I think that's a real big deal right there.

I also like the stand selection part, from the vantage of the deer's bed. On the public you learn that real quick, or the deer hand you your . You got to look at the set from the vantage of the deer, to consider what you can get away with.

Great video, I like how you showed the stand selection. keeping it real is refreshing too. It happens and we can't hide from bad hits. Great way the address one of hunting's most difficult topics.

exactly, so the quality depleates 550%.

you should have the option to upload it in different compressions. same with youtube.

grfox and i uploaded all our videos in HD. I think i only compressed it 5% from the original just to save some time.
