Any tips, strategy's, baits you guys know would help a kid become successful. Would you recommend the dirt hole set for coyotes?

actually thats what my bodie and i use for fox and coyotes ;) i think the dirt hole set is the best setup for those critters .........for coon i would water trap unless you can find some good trais going into a corn feild and get them with canabear trap. for fox and coyot we like to set up on farm tracktor roads, feild lines, points off crops,
when we get new traps we boil them in a specail die to get rid of as much scent as possible ;) , if you think a deers nosie is good well your in for a suprize 8-) any way we scout around looking for tracks, poop, hair any sing of a dog, one thing is that i have two of eveything gloves, hammers you dont want to get bait on your gloves when your setting your trap becasue the dog will smell your bait first on the trap insted of the scent hole that should be a foot or so away from the trap. that scent hole pulls the dog in to the trap, so it has to step over it or around it if it smells that he will filp your trap and the gigs up! another thing is that, MAKE sure the jaws on the trap are pressed fermly into the ground and pack the out side of the jaws tight, the coyot will feel that shift in the earth and know something is there and he'll be intrested in it and dig it up  som scent s we use is canine force you can get it at cabelas or something, or another thing we use is sardeens in a can for some reason the coons and dogs love that smell ;)

look into Fur Fish and Game magazine. One of the great all around outdoors magazines, at least it was 8 years ago when I got it. Lots of good trapping info in there. That, and find an old trapper in your area. Usually good guys willing to help out new guys to keep the traditions alive! Good luck, I really miss trapping and can't wait until I can do it again! It will make you a better hunter too!

My advice was going to be, look up vids. on you tube, but it's pretty well covered here. I struggled for YEARS trying to bed traps properly. It wasn't untill I got to watch someone do it till it sank in. Videos like these can cut your learning time way down.
My advice is, learn what equipment to use and how to make a couple sets the right way and then just do it over and over. Nothing fancy.
Studying the animals you want to trap will help you find locations to trap.
