What are you getting for coon prices?

Unread postby DEERSLAYER » Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:35 pm

I seen a guy on Michigan-Out-of-Doors TV talking about dog proof coon traps and thought it looked pretty cool so I'm thinking about picking up a few traps. Is there any money to be had or isn't it worth the time to learn how to flesh and stretch the hides? If not I'll just cook'em up. :L:

I just want to get a few dog proof coon traps to see how much I enjoy it. I don't want to spend a lot on something I might not stick with. It doesn't sound like there is much money to be made, but I suppose if you eat all the meat it would pay. It sounds like these days it's more about recreation and helping to control the predator population.

Youre gonna need a few more tools outside of just the traps. Youll easily have $200 in it.

What are the tools necessary aside from the dogproof traps that will put the start out cost at $200?

My buddies have been sending their furs to auction in Canada and getting a couple bucks more per fur there than they do selling to a buyer here.

I was thinking of following in this guy's foot steps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y750pLHW ... AAAAAAAAAQ

He has video's showing how to skin, flesh and prepare coons for cooking as well as other video's showing coon trapping sets with the dog proof traps. I really like these traps. I like his simple approach too. He has 98 trapping video's.

How much per fur do you think it is costing to do it that way?

Correction. Not all are about trapping. It looks like he has a lot of cool video's though. Some of you may want to check them out.

buy one little griz or duke DP, a bag of marshmellows and give it a try.
a large freezer is needed if you are selling in the round.
you will need a knife and freezer to sell in the grease.
you will need a skinning knife, a fleshing knife, a beam and wire or wood stretchers, if you are putting up.

expect 50% rate for round, 75% in the grease, 100% put up.

To be honest, it's hard to jump right in and make much profit trapping. As has been said, if you start small- buy a few traps and stakes and equiptment to put up fur, I could see spending $200 to get started- see how you like it before investing alot of money into it. It's hard work. Money can be made, but I wouldn't get into it just for the money.

I talked to a guy yesterday who said he averaged just over $15 for the 100-120 coon he brought in a couple weeks ago.

I was thinking if there was any money in it I might start out a little bigger than planned, but I think I will just get a few Dukes.

Sold all my hides in the early part of March. Tops were $25 and low was $6. Averaged little over $15 a hide. Pretty good for grease coon (just skinned, not stretched)
