Dead deer

Unread postby HuntsMidwest » Wed Mar 23, 2011 6:02 am

Are any of you shed hunters finding any dead deer? I was wondering if this long harsh winter is taking a toll. It's getting towards the end of March and there is still some snow in some areas, with more on its way. So far I haven't heard of many dead ones.

I only found 1 dead doe and she had been there for at least a month.

These are just 3 I took pictures of, but probably found 10 dead ones. All of them were coyote kills after we got the huge blizzard.

he is alive! I was walking through some tall marsh grass along the edge of some thick brush and my dog was about 20 yards off to my side walking parrellel to me. I noticed him stop and looking at something, so I walked over by him. He was smelling the dead deer and then I noticed the possum, This is when I panicked! The possum was sitting facing my dog with its teeth showing and my dogs nose was no more than 6 inches from the possums. He didn't even no the possum was their because it was playing dead. If he would have noticed the possum it could of been ugly.

This is the first spring in a long time I haven't found a dead deer. I usualy average about 5 and the most I found was 10 a few years ago when we had over 100" of snow in southern WI.

I have been walking a few pieces of public land around where i live and have found 5 dead deer so far and one shed. Did find one nice ten point buck. Disappointing that he died, but it was a really nice deer.

Guess I'm a good dead deer finder. Too bad I can't say the same for the sheds.

Found 5 dead deer today, but only 2 were from this year. One looked to be a doe fawn and the other was a mature doe. Could not tell what killed them.

Found this young guy not far from a bedding area. This is the same buck that I watched scent trail a doe I had shot with my bow back in Nov. My guess is he was hit during gun season
