Unbelieveable find while shed hunting!!

Unread postby BigHills BuckHunter » Sat Mar 19, 2011 7:32 am

I found this dead buck tangled in a wire fence today. I have heard stuff like this happening but never thought I would come across something like this. From the teeth wear it looks like a 2 year old maybe 3. I wonder how this happened?

That is really neat! Probably the buck started getting tangled and kept fighting it and fighting it which made it worse.....

What are you going to do with the head?

wow that sucks... but a cool find.

kinda hard to imagain that he couldnt get out of that? Maybe it just seems that way in the photos. Ive seen many simliar pictures, but the rack was usually tangled much worse and with both horns and/or neck involved.

i hate to see a buck go down to man made "obstacle" in there domain.

That's too bad. Those split brows would have been something to see if he would have made it another year.

Yea he would have been really nice next year especially with the splits its too bad he ended up that way. Ive never seen this deer in woods on camera or shining. I guess Im just hoping that he bred a few does to put his genetics through.

I ended up cutting the wire about a foot away from his antler then cut the head off. Im going to get a European mount with the wire still tangled in his antlers, it should look cool especially with the wire and with the bottom jaw still intact. I will post pics of the mount whenever it is finished.

Was the other end of the wire still on the fence post, or held down by something? Cool find.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

It was held down by a post about 20 yards away.

I read a few years ago that many times a buck will try going under a fence as opposed to jumping over if the opportunity exists. The article also stated that they do not have to be badly tangled to become frightened enough to start violently pulling and snap their necks. Could be the case here. Definitely a cool find.

that does suck, glad you found it. last year when the dnr was spot chrcking my land for logging he found a nice 2.5 year old dead aand picked it up for me, it had decent genetics and could have blown up to be a good one, plus i found a great 3.5 year old dead in a scrape that i believe died from fighting that was dissapointing
