Limpy was a buck I was hunting about 12 years ago... Don't know what ever happened to him. I only saw him for one season.
He had a bad limp and could hardly walk on an injured front leg probably from a gun shot the year before. One of his antlers was a heavy 5 side with short tines, the other was a weird goofy beam that looked like the wound had distorted it. Thought I could chase him down and catch him once. Didn't try that again
Anywho, he bedded out in an open grassy area where he could see a road where hunters had access when the wind would blow towards the road. He would face the road with the wind to his back. One day when the wind was right towards the end of the season I drove by to see if he was there. A quick look with my bino's and yep, there he laid watching me....
Sooo, I got a friend and had him drop me off up the road and he went to the road the buck was watching and got out of his car and moved around a little making some noise while I snuck up crawling on my belly to the buck in his bed. I went from an angle so my wind would not hit the bedded buck.
When I got to where I thought was 35 yards I drew my bow and rose to my feet. The whole distance on my bellie I could not see the deer. So when I got up he looked at me and stood up and then looked back at my friend exposing his vitals and an arrow sailed right over his back almost touching him. After he ran away I paced it off at about 19 yards. I crawled a lot closer than I thought.
2 days later I drove by and the buck was bedded right back in the same spot.
Around mid January I was scouting with my friend and we went past the field where the buck spometimes bedded. I said I was going to go up there and look at the bed and see if it was being used. It was the opisate direction we were headed and he didn't want to go up there. So I tried to convince him saying "maybe the sheds will be laying there" He just rolled his eyes. One shed was lying on each side of the bed as if they fell off while he was bedded.
Shed mount pictures.
