Pedicle Injury/Subsequent Growth

Unread postby SamPotter » Wed Mar 09, 2016 11:45 am

I found a deadhead this spring that is from a buck that died 2 falls ago (2014). I recognized the buck as one I had found the left side from in the spring of 2014, mostly because of the lack of a burr and a slightly palmated beam. The right side of the deadhead has a normal burr and rounded beam, so if you found both antlers as sheds, you might not think they were a set.

The shed has a concave base with rough edges, a "spur" on the back, and some dried pus.

The area on the skull where the "spur" had come from healed solid through the skull sutures after he dropped the shed in the spring of 2014.

It appears that when this buck shed his left side, the antler would have come off nearly flush with the skull, with no pedicle post at all left.

My guess is this buck had an injury at the base of his left antler in 2012, either from fighting or the antler taking some skull with it during shedding. It is difficult to tell the exact cause, but it is clear the abnormal burr and slight palmation are the result of a pedicle injury and not genetics.

Cool find.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
