Shed dog training

Unread postby Peeps22 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 10:55 pm

Hey guys, i just got a black lab puppy named Brinley a couple of weeks ago and would like some tips on training her to find shed antlers. Looking for when to start, how to start, and any other pointers people have for me. As for me, i suck at finding sheds so maybe she can help me out haha.

I would suggest getting this Dvd. I have it, think its pretty good, but haven't done any shed training with my puppy yet.

Same guy makes a game recovery dvd, I plan on working on this before the shed hunting. It would be more important to me to find a wounded deer than antlers.

The best overall advice is use clicker technique for all training. It is really effective for new commands and anything really. My dog found treats hidden in the house which then get replaced by antlers. She loves the game and it reminds me of seeing drug dogs on TV. I never followed up and did woods training so she is almost a shed dog lol.

What do you mean by "clicker technique"? Never heard of it.

Clicker training is a form of positive reinforcement training. Works well with puppies. There are lots of videos and books available for it, but premise is pretty simple. Do what you're told, get a click, get a treat. Eventually they start to learn that click means they did something good.

We can't talk in the true sense but the clicker allows for two way communication. The dog will start performing an action in hopes of the reward. Most really enjoy the activity.

First thing is just get them crazy about antlers. Don't let them have it as a chew toy or it'll become any ole toy. It's a special toy they get to play with with you and it's there favorite. That's the situation u wanna create. My dog can find them like crazy, but I also trained her to hunt and blood trail and she prefers furr and feather over bone. In the woods she wants to hunt and not sheds. At home as a game she can compete with any shed dog around.. Something for you to consider.. Several dvd's and YouTube videos out there..
