When do you start?

Unread postby Master Chief » Tue Dec 09, 2014 6:40 am

I'm planning on making my first trip the 13th of February. Just seeing what y'all do. I'm so excited to shed hunt I felt obligated to start some sort of discussion about it :D

Anyone got any goals for their year? All I want is my first 70" or better shed antler. Finding 30 this year would be nice too though :)

I usually start around the 15th of March.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Since I am done buck hunting in WI for the year I will be starting soon. I found a shed the 3rd week of December already and have a feeling some bucks will be dropping early again due to early snow and cold temps this year.

I start scouting very early for next year so most of my sheds are found then. I rarely just go out on a search for sheds.

That's a smart decision. I like to do my scouting after season and mark stands etc now. I use to scout during season a lot and the first year I quit I killed my first big buck. I still look for new places during season, but if you find were a big buck was using after season, you can about bet he'll be back or another one will at some point next year.

Mid January is when I start, or immediately following late muzzleloader season. I usually spot check and stumble on some early, and then I put the miles on late February and March.

Any time after late December. That being said, I found a killer shed this fall on Halloween in a buck bed. The shed was from last year but not eaten up at all. So you never know when you will find them.

I don't get serious until late Feb, early March. That doesn't mean I won't be out walking fields before then though...

I start rabbit and squirrel hunting as soon as pheasant season ends around new years. Rabbit and squirrel hunting is basically shed hunting/deer scouting with a gun.

So my luck was during season. Maybe end of December.
Bow in hand literally tailing 3-4 bucks along a canal levee and I stumbled onto my first shed ever.
70 incher!!!!!
The mass and heft just had me thrown for a loop.
I'm ready to start looking.
