Last year in mid December I spotted a buck I'd never seen before in the picked cornfield beside my house. He had a wide rack that was very distinguishable, his right side was just a long main beam with a brow tine and no other tines. About a week later I took a walk over to where I had seen him go in the woods. I found where he had been bedding and found the shed right antler.
That was the last id seen of him until this Sunday evening. Just before dark I noticed a buck walking across the field with a large rack. I grabbed some binoculars and sure enough it was the same buck with the odd right side. His rack is already outside his ears with a four point left side. I've seen a few other bucks recently but none with that much antler growth yet.
I've heard of bucks shedding around the same time each year but I didn't really know if they started the growing process the same time each year. It makes sense but I don't know the science behind it. Thought?

For starters, we need some pics. They do tend to start growing at different times and at different rates, mostly depending on age and physical condition.

I'll see what I can do as far as pics go. I can get one of the shed. I'll try and get him on a trail cam to post it. I don't have any out right now, I've been slackin.

Take a picture through binoculars the next time you see him.

Re: Shed early, grow early
On April 25th of this year I saw one buck with both sides still on and one buck with 1 inch nubs. I don't think there is any set standard as to when they start to put on antlers.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Interesting that deer in the same area with same food and weather stresses have differrnt shed and growth rates. I too noticed some bucks still carrying a while after others had begun growth.

Re: Shed early, grow early
I have noticed the biggest antlered bucks develop the fastest in late spring and early summer....but just makes sense because they have the most growing to do, so proportionally maybe there is no difference.
I don't know if the biggest bucks shed early on average too but I do know all the bucks that I have seen carry late (into March and later) were average or below average size for the age they seemed to be.
I suspect that antler growth accelerates around spring green up every year when nutrition becomes better for bucks.
