Shed Hunting with flashlights?

Unread postby xpauliber » Wed Feb 13, 2013 5:57 am

My brother is an extreme shed-hunting junkie. He routinely finds around 50 sheds a season and according to his GPS, walks more than 400 miles every spring. He actually enjoys shed-hunting more than actual hunting to kill the buck.

Anyways, he has been sick for the past week and not able to get out in the woods. On Friday, my buddy texted me a pic of a shed he found and just yesterday, a different friend found 3 different sheds with one of them being a brute. I showed my brother all of those pictures yesterday afternoon right before he headed for work. Well, those pictures and knowing that sheds were out there must have been too much for him to take because at 9:00pm, I got a text from him saying "I'm out with 2 flashlights and just found a decent 4-side."

I haven't gotten the details about how he found it, but I'm assuming he had a good crossing in the snow in mind and he went hitting a few of those by way of flashlight.

He said to me one time in November when I was doing all day sits, " I don't know how you can do that man." and I said, "archery hunting to me is what shed-hunting is to you" and he replied: "i completely understand now"

Ive never understood trespassers and they're ways... flashlights. They can make it pretty obvious sometimes.

Thats pretty cool tho. Takes some dedication to get out there in the dark just for sheds! Might have to give that a shot sometime

If you cant wait till daylight to look for them you might have a problem. The obsession people get with them is ridiculous.

If I had a quality piece of ground to comb over every spring, I might get hooked on shed hunting too! I'm mostly just scouting and if I trip over one its a bonus!! Lol!!

Ive used a flashlight before.....

My friend and I shined a buck which we thought just lost his shed so we got out of the truck and used flashlights to find it but no luck. This was on my neighbors who gives me permission to shed hunt it.

I miss too much deer sign looking for sheds...Don't get me wrong I like finding sheds, but I'd rather get the buck before he sheds :D

My brother absolutely gets a rush out of finding sheds and with his job, he has limited time to get out there so he does what he can. I don't think it's "ridiculous" at all. I have an obsession with archery and some of the lengths I go to to kill a buck are extreme and may be considered "ridiculous".

Anyways, here is a picture of his "shed shelf" with a portion of his finds:

And a shelf with some that weren't big enough to make the main shelf:

Solocam the obsession you are calling rediculous is another persons hobbies and obviously a passion for this man. Have some respect for what makes him happy!!

While taking a long hike one morning to Turkey hunt, I found a small shed with a flashlight.

I read a story one time about the folks in Michigan hunting morel mushrooms at night.

I’m sure some of you guys know people that are absolute fanatics about hunting morels. Those shroom hunters find sheds too!
