I've never used a flasher, but I've fished next to guys using a flasher while I was using this. Overall, I'd say the flasher does a better job. It has a little quicker response time. For some reason, when my jig is within about a foot of the bottom, the mark dissolves into the bottom. So I usually end up jigging 18" up to see my bait with room for a fish mark to show up underneath. It has a wider cone angle than the vexilars I've fished next to. I usually marked fish first, regardless of who made the catch. Advantages are using AA batteries instead of a heavy SLA that needs to be hooked up to a charger, and price (though mine is the cheapest black and white version).

My dad used lcd locators designed for mounting to an actual boat and built a carrying box with battery compartment. It functioned similarly. While not as great as a $500 vexilar or marcum, they get the job done and perform well considering the ~$70-120 you invest in it.

Cool.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
