Luck of the Irish!

Unread postby magicman54494 » Tue Mar 19, 2013 6:52 am

No, I'm not Irish but on St. Patty's day I had the luck of the Irish!
I foolishly headed out on a river to do some ice fishing. We used a tried and true method of checking ice depth. We stomped on the ice with our feet. LOL
The ice held so off we went. We were about 50 ft from shore when the worst happened.
The ice (well more like a thin layer of frozen slush) gave way.
I went in and caught myself with my arms. Still holding the sled rope I scrambled out on to the ice. There I stood with a big hole between me and the sled. I dared not move. I had no idea how deep it was, I didn't hit bottom.
We actually laughed as I stood there feeling the icy water ooze into every square inch of my lower half.
The hole revealed that there was about 2 1/2 inches of frozen slush and no ice.
After a few minutes I decided I just needed to go for it and started easing my way to shore.
I pulled the sled around the hole and made my escape.
I changed clothes and headed back out but only caught 1 bluegill.

Stay safe my friend.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

River ice is pretty scary anytime especially if there is any current. Glad to hear you made it out! Many are not that lucky!
