Anybody ever try and shovel the snow in an area on a lake before fishing it to have a spot where some light gets to the bottom and attracts fish?
I have tried it a few times and it seemed to make for more fish in the bucket.

Re: Ice fishing trick
ive tried that before, not sure if it made a differance or not. what i have noticed is that on bright days if you fish out of a dark shack you will get less bites than a guy fishing outside in the daylight.

Re: Ice fishing trick
It could work on a murky lake. I've always been told you dont want light going down the hole. lots of guys around here use hole covers. Most the lakes around me are very clear... I mostly fish at night. I have a friend who crappie fishes at night, he lights up a coleman lantern on the ice and swears it brings in the craps. he does very well.

Re: Ice fishing trick
It could work I suppose since some fish seem to turn on or off when the sun goes behind clouds.

Re: Ice fishing trick
I saw a group of crappie fisherman while i was in college use very bright blue flourescent lights under the ice to attract fish and they swore by it. Anybody else ever seen this?

Re: Ice fishing trick
Ive heard about this before but have never tried it. I do as much night fishing in the dark as I do during the daylight and the results are both good, lately better after dark on my spots (this time of year). Not sure if light plays a major factor? Spose this could also relate to the species you are after?

Re: Ice fishing trick
That can work pretty well for panfish. But when I'm ice fishing for trout/walleyes I set up on snow versus clear ice to be less visible and maintain stealth, shanty or not. It can make a big difference especially in water less than twenty feet deep.
