Dad speared a SLOB sturgeon!

My dad drew a tag for an Upriver Lakes (Poygan) sturgeon spearing tag this year. I did as well, but wasn't able to make the trip down there. Anyways, on the opening morning, he nailed this beast. My grandpa, uncle, and dad were all in the shack. A house a few hundred yards away got a just legal sturgeon. Then, 15 minutes later, a shack closer got a 60 pounder. My uncle optimistically said "Get ready, they're coming closer". Sure enough, about 15 minutes later, a dark shadow appeared in the hole. Not knowing how big the fish was, my dad grabbed the spear and hurled it 6 feet down and into the fishes back just behind the head. Hoping it was going to be a legal fish, my dad began pulling on the rope. Then all three stood in awe as the fish rolled and they could see just how big it was. My uncle frantically grabbed the gaff, not knowing exactly where he should try and gaff it. My dad and grandpa were struggling trying to control the beast and get it up to the surface. My uncle put the gaff in, my grandpa grabbed the tail, and they pulled the fish out of the water. It still had plenty of fight left, and the fish sent aluminum chairs flying across the shack. They managed to steer the fish out the open door, and both my uncle and the fish ended up laying on the ice outside the door. Talk about an exciting experience for them!

The fish may have been the biggest speared on Poygan this year. I know a 177 was taken on Winnebago, but only a couple others over 100 were taken on Poygan. This fish measured 73" and weighed in at 125 pounds.

thats a big one congrats to your dad. i was just up north in wisconsin and on the way up we stoped at a bar with a 188 pound sturgeon mounted on the wall.
