pounding the bottom for panfish
When the fishing gets tough for panfish, especially crappies and gills, lower your jig down to the very bottom and "pound" the muck, it stirs up debris and sends vibrations to the fish that they can pick up in their lateral line, and it mimics an insect trying to surface from the muck and get higher in the water column. I usually pick off the higher fish first, and when they stop biting, or you have non aggressive fish, then go work the bottom and 9 times out of 10, it will be the difference between catching and not.
