Thank God I have not gotten lost in the woods yet but I came close once following a blood trail after I made a bad shot on a windy day, then it rained and I could not follow the blood back to a familiar area.
SO what is the best way to go with gps?
I-phone app? if so which one?
Hand held device?

Thanks JP

I use a Garmin Monterra but if all your looking to do is not get lost its way more then what you need. I use mine to mark everything, beds, scrapes, what tree I want to hunt out of. Garmin came out with new models and Cabelas had a lot of the older ones on sale for a good price, not sure if they still do tho.

I prefer separate devices. I am using a Garmin 62S and have been happy with it.

I also carry a compass and a map as a back up.

Bushnell makes a "backtrack" - its a small gps that holds 3 spots, might help you find a car. About $50.

I have a Garmin hand held and like it.

I also carry a compass - you can get a pin on version that will work just fine and help you get home.

iPhone, Gaia app. Very easy to use, seems very accurate. The aerials aren't great but it will get you in and out. You can buy an external battery for phone so it doesn't die on you.

For a non GPS focused device this is the way to go. But if you dont have a good signal it's obviously worthless. I have had issues scouting to see the maps but the GPS tracking feature is awesome. It sucks a ton of batter though.

If I'm gonna head to big woods or new ground with lots of acreage I will be investing in a gps device - OnX Maps also has mapping chips for those which I think could the best of all worlds. Oh yes always have a compass!

Garmin 64s with onx maps, iphone with google maps. Shows aerial and where I am. And a pin on compass for quick readings and my fail safe. Also have a compass in my pack incase the pin breaks, which it does about once a year. Also carry an external battery for my phone. Great investment

Gps records my track, spots, and any points I find relevant. Aerial shows me where to go, and compass gets me there faster since I can have my gps hanging on my belt and phone in my pocket.

I have never used onx but with Gaia you can select the area on the map and download it for offline use. I have been without signal many times and can still view map and track, use waypoints etc... as long as I previously downloaded the map.

Wanted to share this if anyone is interested, I just came across it on another site while researching the different apps.

If you read to the bottom you can get a free 1 year of GAIA Pro.

I use a combination of 2 different apps. Both let me download aerial imagery for offline use. No signal required.
MotionXgps
And
MeasureMap

I love them both.
MotionX acts just like a standalone GPS unit, but with a huge choice in base map layers. Topo, bing, usgs, lots of choices.
Measure map allows you to easily measure trails, distances, acreage, square feet.... whatever. All that is done on google earth imagery that doesn't need signal.
