Heard a weird noise this past weekend hunting

Unread postby Brad » Wed May 08, 2013 3:26 pm

I was turkey hunting by my wifes deer stand and I kept hearing a weird noise, like a basketball dribbling on a wood floor, slow at first, then super fast like it was real close to the ground. I did a quick search and found out it was a male ruffed grouse drumming. Pretty neat sound, i didn't know there were many of them by our area. Now to try and find one, I wonder how far that sound carries.

Here is a pretty cool video I found showing it.

Pretty common sound up in the northwoods but only heard it a few times down here in the south. I know what you mean about being really confused what it is the first time you hear it.

Had one up north on a log drumming right in front of my tree stand one day. Pretty cool to watch! 8-)

I hear that sound all the time where I hunt. The grouse are plentiful and they scare the crap outta me when they decide to fly off the ground when you are a few feet from them. When I was a youngster, I always thought it was the neighbor having troubles starting his tractor when I heard it. :D

It could be a squatch beating a grouse against a log, never considered that option.

They are tasty little birds but I kind of hate them. I have had many of them bust out of a hiding spot close to bedding area I hunt, not only to they scare the crap out of you but I am positive they tip off a lot of deer.

The grouse were drumming hard this past weekend with the nice weather. Walked one of my leases in Westfield and everywhere I walked I heard birds drumming.

Slang word for Ruffed Grouse is Partridge.
The most famous drummer that is a Partridge is named Danny and he drove around in a very colorful Bus...

Some have to much time on their hands. Too funny! Nice way to start the morning!
