Armadillo's

Unread postby Brad » Fri Apr 27, 2012 11:55 am

Is there a place where you can legally hunt these critters? I would like to add one to my man cave if possible, but want to see if they are legal to hunt, and if so where they are commonly found. I am thinking about going to texas next year for hogs and javelina, and a bonus armadillo would be awesome!

Aren't they just a hard shell oppossum? I wouldn't think they're protected anywhere.

Over the last few years I've seen more and more of these things dead on the hiway on Interstate 40 between Memphis and Jackson, TN. The local newspaper had one make the front page news last year when a guy found one in his garage here. Unheard of in KY.

It seems like those things are migrating north. Be patient and yall might have them up there before long

Even though the Armadillo is the state mammal in Texas, it is legal to hunt... But, it is the leading cause of leprosy so you might think twice...

Armadillos have never been among the cuddly creatures routinely included in petting zoos, but on Wednesday federal researchers offered a compelling reason to avoid contact with the armored animals altogether: They are a source of leprosy infections in humans. Using genetic sequencing machines, researchers were able to confirm that about [glow=red]a third of the leprosy cases that arise each year in the United States almost certainly result from contact with infected armadillos.[/glow] The cases are concentrated in Louisiana and Texas, where some people hunt, skin and eat armadillos. Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is an ancient scourge that has largely disappeared, but each year about 150 to 250 people in the United States and 250,000 in the world contract the illness. As long as the disease is identified relatively quickly, treatment with antibiotics — a one- to two-year regimen with three different drugs — offers an effective cure. But every year dozens of people in the United States do not recognize their skin lesions for what they are early enough and suffer lifelong nerve damage as a result.

Didn't know that. That's interesting. I thought leprosy was pretty much a thing of the past. Guess not

Who'd have thought armadillos and leprosy?
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I thought they would make a nice candy or chip dish, I see that might not be such a great idea!

They would have made a nice peanut bowl at the very least, but not if your arm falls off in the process.
