With all the fresh snow we've been getting in SE WI, I was planning to go out and shoot a few bunnies for a rabbit stew. Might bring the bow for the more open areas. Should be interesting.
Any one else been out rabbit hunting?

Re: Rabbit hunting
Never been rabbit hunting and it sounds like fun. What do you guys suggest using for a gun and what size of shot do you use?

20 gauge with a improved cylinder choke 6 or seven shot, or 410

Re: Rabbit hunting
.410 with a full choke, aim for the head and let them get out a ways if you're plan on shooting them on the jump. With a hound or another guy doing the pushing when they circle back they will only be loping along for an easy shot.
We raised beagles when i was a kid, always a blast hunting them. Miss it a bunch.
On a side note saw a ton....I mean a ton for our area, snowshoe tracks this last weekend scouting deer. Yeah a few wolf were in there too but it was so thick with tracks called a guy I know who has beagles and he is checking it out this week.

I usually stalk them with the .22 or bow.

Re: Rabbit hunting
Kinda glad a few of you recommended a .410 since my Grandfather passed on his old .410 to me and I have been trying to find a good reason to hunt with it. He loved his squirrel hunting with this gun and it would be very special for me to get back in the woods with it again.
Normally I wouldn't consider anything but my bow but will make an exception here.
Any tips on areas to look for bunnies?
Sorry addisonlee I don't mean to hijack your thread! Thought this would be a great thread to add tips and reports.

Re: Rabbit hunting
Our bow club has a one day, two man (bow only) rabbit hunt every year. Results from a couple years ago.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Rabbit hunting
I used to do a lot of rabbit hunting, its a ton of fun. Best spots are pine tree's and brush piles or thick weeds. I have shot most with a. 22 or a 20 gauge, but I bought a .410 single shot for it in case I get back into it some day.

Re: Rabbit hunting
Great discussion here guys.
I personally use a 20gauge, .22lr and my bow. Depending on the area I plan to hunt I bring what's neccessary.
i.e. I wouldn't bring my bow in a brush infest area.
Some of the best rabbit hunting areas are brushy pines 100-200yds away from the road.
