I am working on setting up an Elk trip with my dad. This would be an outfitted/guided hunt. He is not physically up for a DIY public hunt. It would be next year, and he does not have any points anywhere. Looking for a reasonably priced ranch or outfitter to go do a cabin/camp hunt. Anyone know anybody they would recommend? I am looking at CO just because of the amount of easy to get tags, but open to anywhere. And he wants to stay under the $5000 mark, no $8000 hunts for us. Any help?
Thanks
Goober

http://brushmtn.com/ this is were I used to guide we had over 90% kill rate every year and very reasonable prices. Also they can cater to hunters needs if they are not able to hike all over the mountain. PM me if you have any questions, also you dont need pref points to gun hunt we never had anyone that did not get tags.

Thanks mossy! I glanced at the website, looks like a clean operation! I may give them a call. I will PM if I have any questions. Here is one though; as a former guide, what is customary for a tip for the guide?

Alot depended on the hunt and how many hunters I was guiding each season. I beleived that my hunters paid good money to be there and I tried to help them out so they can really enjoy the trip. I would gut the animal get it off the mountain and and quartered in the cooler. I also would cape out the skull and have the cape ready for the taxidermist. If i had time at night I would help process meat for my hunters aswell. That being said i typically reveived 100-200 per hunter. In all honesty the best tip I ever got was a hand made knife with a black stone handle and turquios inlays.

Re: looking for Elk outfitter advice
Goober cant help with guides but CO is a good place for tags. And how cool to get to go on a hunt with your dad. Mine never hunted and will be 83 soon. You got me thinking how cool that would be.
Good luck, and I do have a cousin in CO that may be able to get some info for you. I will ask him next time we speak. Right now he is elk hunting and come the 15th he will be tagging along on a CO Moose

Re: looking for Elk outfitter advice
Bump...........Still looking. We have narrowed down to rifle hunt, in a wilderness camp. Pack in on horses. We dont need anything fancy, or a trophy only area. I am having a very hard time choosing an outfitters. I really want to go with a guide who gets a recommendation from someone I know. We are hoping to find something in the $3,000 to $4,000 range. I am even OK with semi guided or drop camp. If any one has any ideas, I am grateful to hear them.
Mossy, I looked at the place you guided at, looks nice but more than we have to spend. Thanks though.

Re: looking for Elk outfitter advice
I would research Land Owner tags in NM if I had 5K to spend on a hunt like you describe. A 100$ member ship to huntin fool might be worth it in your case. They could help you out with this I would think.

Re: looking for Elk outfitter advice
Ben, based on the time of year might want to hit the Madison Deer and Turkey, or the Ocimoniwoc (sp?) show. Should be a lot of outfitters. Maybe not the referral you were looking for, but you could shop several options and can always get references (always ask for unsuccessful hunters).
I will be at the Ocimonwoc show and likely the D&T as well. Would be good to see you again and bring Angie.
